Meet Tom, an experienced 'Geek'

It all started in high school in sunny southern California more than 30 years ago.  Sitting in a dusty corner of the school library was a bunch of cool looking stuff which later turned out to be an editing console, complete with video decks, edit controller, and audio mixing board.  Next to this apparently brand new setup, was a large TV camera case, portable VTR, tripods, microphones, extension cords and a lighting kit. Being the naturally curious electronics geek I was, I wondered why all this COOL stuff was covered in dust?

I walked over to the librarian and quietly asked what THAT stuff was for pointing at the equipment.  She tells me that it was recently donated by the local cable company and that they hadn't had any use for it, nor what to even do with it.  She said that a couple of Seniors used it once to make some "walking the quad" footage, interviewing students and whatnot.

Well, I wasn't gonna let them sit there and collect more dust.  Soon after I met up with another couple of students who also expressed some interest, and we decided to talk to administration about it, and why not create a class or 2 on video production?  Many weeks later, the equipment was incorporated into an Art class and we enrolled.  We would shoot campus activities and edit them into programs to be played at assemblies.  I was hooked and North Video Production (NVP) was born.

During this same period of time, we were one of the very few high schools who had a working, broadcasting radio station (KNHS), of which I was a relief DJ on lunch breaks (remember, I'm a Geek!).  I got to mix music and video together and gain experience all before graduating high school!

Shoot ahead 30+ years and on January 1st, 2014 KNVP Studios is born.  I take the "K" from KNHS, which is the FCC designation for radio stations broadcasting on the west coast of the US, and "NVP" from my favorite video production experience (North Video Production).

I continued my education after high school and obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications, with a minor in Audio Recording and Music Synthesis (ARMS) from California State University, Dominguez Hills in 1995.

I have worked in the professional television, film and audio/video business for over 30 years.  I have worked with the biggest studios in the world such as MGM, Sony Pictures, MTV, and HBO, and countless others in state-of-the-art facilities.  My experience includes laserdisc and DVD production, being a staff video editor (in both linear/non-linear and on-line/off-line), a video and audio compressionist, a tape operator, a technical director for mobile productions, a master control operator for broadcast television, stock footage compiler, a college-level internship mentor and coordinator, sound mixer, and a whole lot more.
